The artwork on the bench at the junction between Grove Road and Brecon Road pays tribute to the town’s soft drinks history. Lewis Brothers Ltd, known locally as Lewis the Pop, were “mineral water manufacturers” located on the left-hand side of Grove Road, just after the George Street junction. They specialised in soft and non-alcoholic drinks, including the ‘Avona’ an ‘exquisite non-alcoholic beverage manufactured only by Lewis Bros of Pontardawe’ and ‘which radiates everywhere’ according to its label. Other drinks sold, in glass or stoneware bottles, were sparkling Grapefruitade, Ginger beer, Portello, Keeko and Orange Crush.
